And a Repro vs NOS critique here: NACO Standard "repro"

640866 housing w/vertical stud orientation. Studs are yellow zinc or cad plated.

The paint is a bit scratched & scuffed from 60 years of beating around in a cardboard box, but intact and will polish up nicely.

Note the length of the studs and wire connector. They are even w/each other.

These were changed in the later 646599 housing (more on this further down the page).

The parts to put it together. Pieces on left are NOS, pieces on right used.

Screws are 6-32 x 7/16", yellow chromated zinc or cad.

Two types of license lens retainers shown.

Rubber washers are buffers between the retainer clips and the lens glass.

License lens retainer w/buffer in place.

I'm not sure if this is the correct orientation for it, but it seems the most logical..

License lens installed.
Complete w/door & lens installed.
Just more photos from different angles.
The info below comes from Willys '45 and '47 CJ2A, and '49 CJ2A/CJ3A Parts manuals.

It is condensed to address ONLY the tail light units themselves. The extra bits & pieces are not included.

The '47 manual shows the dual tail light option in chrome trim only. From this, you might conclude that the dual light option was not even available until they changed from black to chrome trim.

MOST interesting, is that the passenger side tail light assembly is THE SAME as the drivers side. ie, it would have had a license plate lens.

The '49 manual is confusing. It shows 4 different assemblies, with a MAJOR discrepancy in serial numbers at the change from black to chrome trim.

The original 643726 chrome unit has been superceded by 646594 (which didn't come into use until after s/n 209951), which was subsequenntly replaced w/646918 at some unspecified serial number.

As in the '47 manual, the early passenger side assembly is THE SAME as the drivers side. So it too should have a license lens in it.

The 640866 housing was superceded by 646599 at s/n 209951. This new housing has longer studs (1" vs .785") to accomodate a light bucket to body standoff bracket (p/n 669879), and the the bulb connector has been moved further into the bucket, so "rays from the tail lamp would illuminate the plate better". See the drawings below..

At a later, unspecified serial number, the housing was changed again to p/n 647051. I have no info regarding this change.

The last set shows different left & right side assemblies. These are presumably still NACO Standard assemblies, since all of the sub-assemblies and parts for them are still NACO parts.

See Bob Westermans analysis of NACO vs ALA lights from a CJ3A perspective: NACO and ALA Tail Lights.

This drawing is of the original 640749 assembly.

I "borrowed" from the next drawing, and changed some dimensions (studs & connector) to derive this one, and added part numbers for the indicated items.

Note the stud lengths & connecor/bulb location compared to the drawing below.

This is the later 646594 assembly (after s/n 209951)..

This drawing has been floating around the web in a low-resolution GIF scan of a photocopied page. It was very poor quality.

Here, it's cleaned up for legibility, and annotated with part numbers for the indicated items.
